The South Bronx to "Get Screened, Stay Healthy"
On October 23rd, 2007, the Mayor’s Office will be holding a kick-off event for the Get Screened, Stay Healthy initiative as part of the New York City Health Literacy Campaign. The event will take place at the Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx. Attending will be Dr. Guillermo Linares, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs.
The South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO) is a partner in the New York City Health Literacy Campaign, a collaboration between the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the Mayor’s Office, and the Adult Education System.
The goal of the New York City Health Literacy Campaign is to connect adult learners to city services by providing knowledge and skills in the classroom and giving them the opportunity to put their learning into practice.
Since 2006, SoBRO has been incorporating health literacy into its English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education classes. One of the activities students have actively participated in was the Health Awareness Fair where students selected various health topics; conducted extensive research, utilizing both the internet and printed reference materials; created written reports; illustrated their topics on display boards; and prepared oral presentations for each other, SoBRO staff, and special guests.
