SoBRO Selected as Plaza Program Awardee

April 16, 2009

As part of their Plaza Program, NYC Dept. of Transportation has selected SoBRO's project to redesign and enhance McKinley Plaza at 169th Street and Boston road in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.

NYCDOT received 22 applications for the first round of the NYC Plaza Program from not-for-profit organizations in all five boroughs. Applications were reviewed and evaluated according to the City's strategic goals as presented in PlaNYC and site-specific criteria, including whether or not neighborhoods already have open space, the integration of the planned improvements into the community, and site context.

SoBRO's project will enhance the public space and make McKinley a more attractive and vital place for residents and businesses. By removing a slip lane this project will expand McKinley Square by 8,000 square feet. This will allow the community to expand a farmers market and create a town center for the neighborhoods of Morrisania and Clermont. The removal of the slip lane will also allow children arriving by bus to walk to nearby PS 63 without having to cross a street, reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles.
