Health Care Reform and Small Business

On Tuesday, October 19th, 2010, Maura Bluestone, President & CEO of Affinity Health Plan will speak at SoBRO’s South Bronx Leadership Forum (SBLF). The topic of this forum will focus on the impact of health care reform on small business and the uninsured. Maura Bluestone has served as President and CEO of Affinity Health Plan since it began operations as The Bronx Health Plan in 1987. Working with several Federally Qualified Health Centers in the Bronx, she conceived and developed this not-for-profit health plan, committed to improving the health of underserved populations. The organization has grown and expanded over the years, and now serves over 260,000 Members in the New York City metropolitan area.

In addition to her responsibilities at Affinity, Ms. Bluestone serves as Chair of the Coalition of NYS Public Health Plans, and serves on the Board of the Association of Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP); she also co-chairs the Medicaid Committee of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Before founding the Health Plan, Ms. Bluestone held several positions as a policy analyst and program evaluator in both public and private sector organizations. Her public sector work included evaluation of Medicare cost-containment and utilization management programs, and investigation of the impact of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident on public and occupational health. Her private sector work included directing multi-year evaluation studies of Federal health regulatory programs.

The SBLF gives individuals that play a key role in this city an opportunity to talk about their plans and priorities by addressing leaders from the public, private and non-profit sectors, along with members of the community. Previous guests have included Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Former Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Charles E. Schumer and many more of the region’s most influential figures. Maura Bluestone will make an excellent and honorable addition to this distinguished roster. Breakfast will be provided at 8:30am and the event will begin at 9am.
