SoBRO Offers 10 Week Training Course to Low-Income Entrepreneurs

April 28, 2010

Starting Wednesday, February 24, 2010, SoBRO will offer a 10-week business training session specifically tailored to address the needs of low-income Bronx residents interested in launching a business. The course will be held at the SOBRO Center at 555 Bergen Avenue from 9:30am-1:00 pm, and breakfast will be served. The class will meet once a week over the 10-week period.

SoBRO, with sponsorship from SBA Prime, developed these workshops to respond to the rising wave of business-minded Bronx residents who desire to capitalize on their community’s assets, many of whom have myriad innovative entrepreneurial ideas, but may need guidance with planning and execution. The 10 week course covers all the essential components of business planning and development. Students learn how to identify their customers, survey the competition, select a market segment, and later incorporate their findings into a market study. In addition, participants learn how to choose an appropriate business structure and create financial projections. The importance of money management and maintaining a good credit history are also emphasized.

For Monique, a recent graduate of the program, “It was great to be in a supportive environment, with so many other women who, similar to me, possess a strong sense of independence, resilience, and a desire to be in control of their lives and become their own boss.” After working in the cleaning industry for 15 years, Monique decided it was time to put her expertise to work and start her own business. “At SOBRO, I’ve always felt supported. Even after I completed the 10-week training and produced a business plan, I continue to receive one-on-one counseling”.
