U.S. Census 2010: The Bronx Counts!

Every ten years, the United States mounts a massive effort to count each and every one of its residents. The tallies determine how government and private agencies allocate resources and levels political representation, among other things. An accurate census count is critical to ensuring balanced democratic representation and fair funding levels for our communities.

With this in mind, SoBRO is helping the U.S. Census Bureau to make sure that the Bronx is accurately represented in the 2010 Census. For one, we have volunteered space for the NY Regional Census Center to hold team meetings, and given Census representatives access to hundreds of our adult education students. These students, many of them recent arrivals from other countries, are among the most difficult residents to count. Ensuring them that participating in the Census is safe and, even more, profoundly important to the health of their communities helps the Census team to overcome one of their most prominent obstacles in obtaining an accurate count of the residents in our community.

Check out the 2010 Census website for more information on how you can ensure a fair an accurate count of your community.
