SoBRO Awarded Contract to Operate Transitional Jobs Program
SoBRO was among the 22 organizations around the state to be awarded a contract from the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) to help low-income adults and those on public assistance gain work experience.
SoBRO's Latest Public School Partnership, PAIHS @ Monroe, Opens its Doors
The Pan American International High School at Monroe (PAIHS @ Monroe) in the Bronx, the newest International High School in New York City, will welcome its first students this September. The school, which is designed to serve the needs of late-entry immigrant English language learners who speak Spanish as their native language, is recruiting students to start school on Sept. 8, 2008. PAIHS @ Monroe will provide the unique educational experience that international schools have developed to address the needs of recent arrivals to the United States and the Bronx community in particular.
Envision a Drug Free South Bronx
The "Envision a Drug Free South Bronx" mural, commissioned as a part of SoBRO's Drug Free Communities initiative, now adorns a wall across from the SoBRO Center.
Drug Free Communities (DFC) is a federal anti-drug program that supports community coalitions that mobilize their communities to prevent youth alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse.

Community Service Initiative Students Participate in NYC Tap Project Water Walk
On Saturday, March 15th, students of SoBRO's Community Service Initiative (C.S.I.) program will participate in the NYC Tap Project Water Walk, which is intended to raise awareness and support for children worldwide who suffer from a lack of readily avaiable clean water.
Anyone interested in the event is encouraged to sponsor SoBRO's walkers or to join the walk themselves.
Commissioner Jeanne B. Mullgrav to Speak at South Bronx Leadership Forum
On Thursday, April 10, 2008, Jeanne B. Mullgrav, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) will speak at SoBRO’s South Bronx Leadership Forum (SBLF). Commissioner Mullgrav was appointed to her current post by Mayor Bloomberg in 2002. Since that time, she has overseen a dramatic increase in her department’s resources and has effectively channeled those resources into New York City organizations, yielding tremendous results for us and our communities.
Lincoln Center to Provide Workshops and Health Screenings at SoBRO
On February 27, 2008, the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO) will host an event in cooperation with Lincoln Medical Center as part of the New York City Health Literacy Campaign. Throughout the day on Wednesday, health professionals from Lincoln Medical Center will lead workshops on the health concerns that most impact he Bronx community followed by free screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, two of the most common chronic health diseases in our community.
